RE: National Asian American/Pacific Islander Survey
Major Findings
A Civiqs poll for Justice Unites Us finds that Asian American/Pacific Islanders (AAPI) are enthusiastic about voting in the 2022 elections. In the battleground states of Arizona, Georgia, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, AAPI voters favor Democratic U.S. Senate candidates over Republicans by a margin of 53% to 43%; nationally that margin grows to 55% to 34%. The survey of 1,023 AAPI registered voters nationwide was conducted from June 10-14, 2022.
Among AAPI voters, younger voters and women are most likely to prefer Democrats over Republicans in a generic senate matchup. Nationwide, 63% of AAPI voters aged 18-34 would vote for a Democratic candidate, versus 21% who would vote Republican.
Both the Democratic and Republican Parties are viewed negatively by a majority of AAPI voters in battleground states. Just over half of AAPI voters in battleground states (51%) have an unfavorable opinion of the Democratic Party, and two-thirds (66%) have an unfavorable opinion of the Republican Party.
In the 2020 presidential election, exit polls found that Asian voters preferred Joe Biden over Donald Trump by a margin of 61% to 34%. However, President Biden's favorable rating among AAPI voters nationwide now stands at 50%, and is lower (44%) among AAPI voters in battleground states.
The survey results are consistent with a national political environment in which President Biden's job approval rating has fallen since he took office in 2021. The findings also underscore the importance to Democrats in 2022 of mobilizing AAPI voters to return to the level of support they showed for Democratic candidates in the last election cycle.
The most important issues to AAPI voters for the November 2022 elections are the cost of living, jobs and the economy, gun control, and election integrity. In battleground states, more than half (54%) of AAPI voters say that voting rights and election integrity are one of their top three most important issues in deciding how to vote. Another 44% of AAPI voters in battleground states note the cost of living, and 33% mention jobs and the economy.
A sizable and significant 36% of AAPI voters in battleground states list gun control as a major determining factor in their 2022 vote choice. Nationwide, 48% of AAPI voters aged 65 and over say that gun control is a top issue for determining their vote in 2022.
Highlighting the unique complexity of organizing AAPI voters, the survey finds that only 60% speak only English in their homes. The other 40% also speak a wide variety of languages including Mandarin, Tagalog, Cantonese, Hindi, Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese, and more.
Methodology
Civiqs interviewed 1,023 Asian American/Pacific Islander (AAPI) registered voters in the United States from June 10-14, 2022. The survey was conducted online, among selected members of the Civiqs research panel. Sampled individuals were emailed by Civiqs and responded using a personalized link to the survey at civiqs.com. The survey results are weighted by age, gender, education, and party identification to be representative of the population of AAPI registered voters in the United States. The general design effect due to weighting is 1.94. The survey has a margin of error of ±4.3% at the 95% confidence level, accounting for the design effect.
